Durham's Historic Chicken Hut Secures $50K Grant for Preservation |
Iconic Black-Owned Restaurant Recognized for Cultural Significance |
Durham's cherished culinary landmark, The Chicken Hut, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express.
This funding aims to support the preservation and enhancement of historic small businesses across the nation.
Established in 1957 as The Chicken Box, The Chicken Hut has been a cornerstone of the community for over six decades.
Owned by the Tapp family, the restaurant has long been a gathering place for residents, offering not just meals but a sense of belonging.
Owner Tre Tapp attributes the restaurant's enduring success to exceptional customer service and quality food.
"It's the customer service first," Tapp emphasized.
"Because I always say, you can go anywhere and get food.
But if you don't have good customer service, that goes a long way.
You want to feel like you're appreciated."
He added that they "cook with love," ensuring every dish resonates with patrons.
The grant program, now in its fifth year, selected The Chicken Hut as one of 50 recipients for 2025.
Carol Quillen, President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, highlighted the importance of such establishments.
"These restaurants demonstrate the power that places hold.
For generations, neighbors have gathered here, shared stories, made new connections, and enjoyed regional cuisine that often reflects our nation's global roots," Quillen stated.
"We're grateful and proud to join with American Express to help ensure that these meaningful places thrive and continue to serve as vibrant, welcoming spaces for years to come."
The program focuses on spotlighting small, family-owned restaurants, providing funds for renovations and expansions to ensure their longevity.
In addition to The Chicken Hut, two other North Carolina establishments, Corner Kitchen in Asheville and Zadie's Market in Marshall, also received grants.
Beyond the grant, The Chicken Hut has been actively involved in community events.
On August 2, 2025, the restaurant hosted a "Free to the City" event, offering complimentary meals to attendees.
The event featured members of the Duke Men's Basketball Team, drawing a large crowd eager to engage with local sports figures and enjoy the restaurant's renowned cuisine.
Furthermore, the restaurant has been nominated for local landmark status by Preservation Durham.
This nomination underscores the establishment's historical and cultural significance to the Durham community.
As The Chicken Hut continues to serve the Durham community, this grant and the potential landmark status highlight the restaurant's enduring legacy and its pivotal role in the city's cultural fabric. |
